All of our public workshops are interactive and are designed using a variety of learning methods to best meet your learning preferences. And we draw from the latest evidence to ensure that the content is current.

Leadership Excellence for Managers and Supervisors – Full Program


Hosted in collaboration with the Construction Association of Nova Scotia


This five day education program provides knowledge building and practical skill development for those in leadership positions and who are currently managing others. The program provides an opportunity to build confidence and skills to take on management roles. It covers the fundamentals of leading and working in a team environment and assists with refining and enhancing one’s ability to manage and motivate individuals and/or groups.


The Leadership Excellence for Managers and Supervisors program includes five modules, listed below. Each module can be taken independently or as part of the full program.


All education sessions will take place at the Construction Association of Nova Scotia: 134 Eileen Stubbs Ave., Unit 103 in Dartmouth, NS.



Module 1: Leading on the Front Line (December 13, 2017: 8:30am – 4:00pm)

Module 2: Communicating with Confidence (January 10, 2018: 8:30am – 4:00pm)

Module 3: Dealing with Difficult Behaviours (January 24, 2018: 8:30am – 4:00pm)

Module 4: Training and Coaching People to Perform (February 14, 2018: 8:30am – 4:00pm)

Module 5: Building Personal and Team Accountability (March 7, 2018: 8:30am – 4:00pm)

Compassion Fatigue and the Helping Professional


Hosted in collaboration with the Health Care Human Resource Sector Council


Are you a helping professional? If so, you may know that people in the caring professions often experience compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue is described as a profound emotional and physical exhaustion that helping professionals and caregivers can develop over the course of their career. During this half-day, interactive workshop, you will learn about the signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue and identify personal self-care strategies to deal with compassion fatigue and increase stress resiliency.

Personality Dimensions: Introductory Workshop


Curious about understanding what motivates behaviour in yourself and your co-workers? Interested in exploring tools and techniques for working with different personalities and temperaments? Learning about your personality temperament helps you to recognize strengths and appreciate differences, express yourself appropriately and communicate more effectively. This half-day, interactive workshop will elevate your morale and enthusiasm, optimize your performance and efficiency and yield higher productivity.


Hosting Effective Meetings


Do you spend a lot of time in meetings? Whether you’re a member of a work team, a project team or a committee, it takes focused effort to function effectively and efficiently. Join us for this half-day workshop where you will be equipped with tools and tips to support effective team work and meeting management. We’ll discuss the importance of meeting guidelines and describe how to develop them, and we’ll explore strategies to address common meeting challenges. You’ll also complete a questionnaire to evaluate the effectiveness of your meetings!



Conversations that Count: Effective Strategies for Effective Communication


In today’s competitive business world and team-based work environment, interpersonal communication is a critical element of lasting success. How well you communicate can make or break how others view your work performance, your approach to team work and even your chances for career advancement. Join us for this half-day workshop to improve your interpersonal communication in the workplace. You’ll leave with new tips and techniques to help you listen to understand and speak to be heard!







Conflict Resolution


Teams experience conflict. It is expected and normal! However, the word conflict has a negative connotation for many people. If properly understood and managed, interpersonal conflict may have constructive and positive outcomes for you and your team. Join us for a half-day workshop to learn how to turn conflict into an opportunity to strengthen your relationships. You’ll determine your typical conflict resolution style be completing the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument.



Personal Learning Styles: What Makes People Tick?


Curious about why people interact and react differently in groups? Interested in exploring strategies for managing challenging participant behaviours? All adults learn differently. Whether it’s learning how to drive a car, use a computer or ski down a mountain, we all have preferred methods. The best facilitators know their own learning styles and use different strategies to appeal to the different learning styles in their workshops or meetings. This half-day, interactive workshop is designed for anyone who would like to increase their knowledge, skills and confidence to prepare for and lead an effective meeting, discussion or workshop.



Building Change Resilience at Work

Retirement Dimensions


Are you thinking about retirement, or are you newly retired and interested in broadening your retirement activity options? During this half-day workshop you will explore your values, strengths, concerns, interests and relationship preferences as well as your philosophical view of retirement. If you’ve have already taken the Personality Dimensions® workshop you will gain the greatest benefit from working with Retirement Dimensions™. However, this workshop can be taken on its own as well. Retirement Dimensions™ helps you to set goals and plan for the future. It gives you permission to dream outside the retirement box!



Diversity Awareness


Diversity is all around us: where we work, live and play. We see this cultural diversity reflected through race and ethnicity, language, (dis)ability, age, sexual orientation, gender and gender identity, socio-economic status and so on. This half-day workshop will help you increase your self-awareness about diversity and identify ways you can enhance cultural sensitivity in your work, community and family life.



Program Planning: Step by Step


Are you involved in the planning of new programs or services? If so, then join us to explore the principles, processes and techniques of program planning.  We’ll discuss the importance of program planning, its key steps and the components of a program profile. This one-day workshop is designed using the fundamental principles of adult learning and the learning activities are intended to be interactive and relevant to program planning in a variety of work settings. Leave with new skills and confidence to lead or participate in program planning!



Generational Differences in the Workplace


Are you a Baby Boomer, a Gen Xer or a Millennial? Curious about how generational influences impact your workplace? This half-day workshop will help you explore the generational gaps in a workplace and potential workplace motivators and irritants for Baby Boomers, Gen Xers and Millennials. Through self-awareness and reflection you will leave confidently with new strategies to build positive work relationships and productive workplaces.



Bullying in the Workplace


Bullying in the workplace is more common than you might think. Workplace bullying is often hard to identify—and even harder to manage. This half-day interactive workshop will help you learn more about how bullying is defined, the characteristics and types of bullying, as well as implications for teams and organizations.



The Customer Experience: Quality Customer Service in Health


Do you work in a community-based health organization or health care setting with patients, clients or residents? If so, you may be hearing more about the notion of customer service. It is becoming recognized as a key element to improving the person’s experience and providing quality care, programs and support services. This practical, interactive, full-day workshop will help you enhance your knowledge, skills and confidence to excel in your approach to providing quality customer service. Join us as we discuss customer diversity in health and differentiate health care customer service from other types of service interactions. You’ll leave with new tips to polish your telephone communication skills, active listening skills, and approach to handling challenging customer behaviours!





Vital Signs: Elder Abuse Awareness for Healthcare Professionals


The Vital Signs workshop was developed to provide healthcare professionals with a learning opportunity to:


• better understand elder abuse.

• identify and if possible, mitigate, potential warning signs of elder abuse.

• use effective communication strategies to discuss elder abuse.

• be aware of and understand legislation that pertains to abuse.

• better understand common legal documents that seniors may have in place that will have an impact on their care.

• identify community resources that may assist seniors and/or provide more information.


This case-based, half-day workshop was developed as part of the Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia’s (LISNS) Elder Abuse Awareness for Healthcare Professionals Project, funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. LISNS worked in co-operation with the Centre on Aging (Mount Saint Vincent University) and the Nova Scotia Department of Seniors.
